Hello Canberra,
📆 Today: It’s Monday 12th August. Have a great week.
⛅️ Weather: 18° and partly cloudy. A slight 30% chance of a shower in the afternoon.
Father’s Day Plans
With Father's Day just three weeks away, I've rounded up some specials happening around Canberra, hopefully giving you plenty of time in the family group chat to organise a booking:
- Father's Day Guy (High) Tea: Chifley's Bar & Grill (Hotel Kurrajong) is doing a high tea with treats like BBQ pork sliders, corn on the cob, whisky chocolate mousse and rosemary loin chops. More.
- Atrium BBQ Buffet: The Atrium (Pavilion Hotel) is putting on a Father's Day BBQ Buffet Lunch featuring a selection of sausages, minute steaks, prawn skewers, chicken tenders alongside rolls and salads. There will be jacket potatoes for the vegetarians. Children's prices are $15, and adults are $65. More.
- Oh No! Yum Cha: Oh No's all-you-can-eat Yum Cha is held on the first Sunday of every month. That lines up with Father's Day, and there are still some bookings available. More.
- Dad's Day out at Bentspoke: Treat dad to a 2-course meal at the brewpub, a tour of the Mitchell Cannery (with beer on arrival), and a Bentspoke Glass and Beanie. More.
- Poachers Pantry: Enjoy a beautiful 3-course set menu for lunch, which features a bolognese raviolo, T-bone steak, and dessert. More.
Let me know if you have any other suggestions for Father’s Day
Exhibition: 🖼️ Sidney Nolan
For the first time in 24 years, Sidney Nolan's series For the Term of His Natural Life is on display at the Canberra Museum and Gallery. Nolan completed 31 crayon-pastel drawings over the course of a week depicting scenes from Marcus Clarke's convict novel, For the Term of His Natural Life. Details here.
Kids: 🐠 Reef Up
Reef UP! combines the latest scientific research with the magic of theatre to share the story of what is happening to our coral reefs and what we can do to help. The free show will be happening at the Kippax, Belconnen, Dickson and Gungahlinlibrary branches this week as part of National Science Week.
Nightlife: 🕺 Pink Pony Club
Pink Pony Club is a special place where boys and girls can all be queens every single day. Expect to hear DJs playing your favourite pop anthems all night long! It's happening at The Baso this Saturday. Details here.
Comedy: 😂 Celeste Barber
Australian comedian Celeste Barber is coming to the National Convention Centre next week. Backup Dancer promises to tackle a range of big political topics, from freeing nipples and inappropriately texting therapists to what it would really be like to be Taylor Swift's backup dancer. Details here.
Weekend Sport
It was a dismal weekend for Canberra teams:
The Gunners (men's basketball) lost the grand final game to the Maitland Mustangs 86-67. More.
The Raiders NRL team lost to the Sea Eagles 46-24. They are sitting 11th on the table, still 2 points outside the top 8.
The Raiders NRLW team lost to the Sharks and are 7th on the table.
Development: 🏗️ Plans Lodged for 50 Apartments in Deakin
A development application to build 50 apartments in Deakin has been lodged. The Embassy development is on the site of the recently closed Margaret Dimoff Art Gallery. You can see the building design and DA here.
Tidbits:
Sirius Building: The Sirius Building in Woden has been renamed Yaradhang, the Ngunnawal word for "eucalyptus”. It was previously named after the flagship of the First Fleet.
Q+A: ABC's Q+A political talk show will be broadcast live from The Q Theatre in Queanbeyan tonight. The show is usually broadcast from Sydney but goes on the road occasionally.
