Around Canberra: 🛍️ Australian Designer Precinct

The Australian Designer Precinct at Canberra Centre opens today. New stores include MECCA, July Luggage, Rebecca Vallance, Scanlan Theodore and Viktoria & Woods. Shopaholics may want to call in sick to work—there are freebies: MECCA is giving a Beauty Loop gift to the first 4,000 customers; the first 30 at Viktoria & Woods will receive a bouquet of white tulips and light refreshments; and July Luggage is gifting the first 100 customers. Details here.

Exhibition: DNA Laundry

I missed including this in Tuesday's arts section. The Vault in Dairy Road is hosting an art installation by Canberra artist flutterbry (Bryan Fitzpatrick). It features more than 100 sculptures made entirely from discarded plastic laundry hamper lids and cable ties, transforming everyday waste into a vibrant world of creatures, flowers and geometric forms. Details here.

Exhibition: 🐨 50 Years of Constable Kenny

To mark the 50th anniversary of Constable Kenny Koala, the AFP Museum is presenting an exhibition at the National Capital Exhibition to celebrate the iconic community policing mascot. Explore five decades of memorabilia, puppets, costumes, media and interactive learning tools. Details here.

📰 Tidbits:

Hotel to be Replaced: The Premier Hotel Belconnen, now operating as Ramada Encore, is closing and will be redeveloped as apartments by developer Bloc. It will close its doors for good on 30 September.

Housing as a Human Right: The ACT has passed nation-leading legislation to make access to adequate housing a recognised human right—the first in Australia. The change, starting in 2027, won't mean housing is immediately provided to everyone, but it does give more legal weight to protections against things like arbitrary evictions and service cutoffs, and it will require fair provision of homes. The bill received strong support from the ACT Human Rights Commission and community groups.
