Canberra is going green for the Raiders' finals campaign, kicking off this Sunday. The Illumicube, Malcolm Fraser Bridge, light rail stops, Lonsdale Street and more will be lit up in green across the weekend. You’ll be able to watch the game at all the clubs and many bars around Canberra—and they can stay open later as Sunday’s match has been designated a “special event” by the ACT Government. Here are some of the special happenings:
The Dock: Free return buses will run from The Dock in Kingston to the game this Sunday (book via their website). They’ll also have green bangers and mash on the menu, and if the Raiders win, they’ll shout a Green Midori Milk—not quite the same as the original lime green Canberra Milk, but the next best thing!
Limelight Cinemas: Watch the Raiders on the biggest cinema screen in Canberra. Limelight in Tuggeranong is showing the game in their XD Cinema. Tickets are $10 and include a medium drink. Details here.
Assembly: $50 gets you transport to and from the game, plus a burger and a schooner at Assembly in Braddon. Details here.
Capital Brewing: The Raiders will be on all the screens with the sound turned up, alongside a one-off Green Lager. Be sure to book ahead!
The Cézanne to Giacometti: Highlights from Museum Berggruen / Neue Nationalgalerie exhibition at the National Gallery ends next Sunday. If you’ve been meaning to go, now’s the time to book. Details here.
Science Around You is an interactive walking trail around the lake. Twelve vibrant flower crates have been set up along the trail, featuring photo booth selfie spots and an interactive science quiz. Details here.
Pialligo Estate is starting a free Weekend Wine Tasting Series. They’ll be opening a cellar door later this spring, but in the meantime, they’re holding tastings in the Small Pavilion each Saturday and Sunday from 10am–4pm. Try wines from local vineyards and meet the winemakers—this weekend, Quarry Wines and Sapling Yard will be visiting. Details here.
Fairy Wrens: It wasn’t just a cold winter for us—Canberra’s bird population has also been doing it tough. Less than half the Superb Fairy Wrens that live in the National Botanic Gardens survived the winter. The birds have been monitored by ANU biologists since the 1980s, and this year has seen the largest loss recorded. More.
ANU Vice-Chancellor Resigns: After months of turmoil, ANU vice-chancellor Professor Genevieve Bell has resigned. More.
Name the Zoo’s New Baby Zebra: The National Zoo and Aquarium has welcomed its 29th zebra foal, a playful female born on 6 September. She doesn’t yet have a name, and you can enter a suggestion to be in the running to win a special meeting with the zebra herd, an up-close rhino encounter, and free zoo entry. Details here.
Merry-Go-Round Reopens: Good news—the Civic Merry-Go-Round has reopened. The ride was closed due to a fault. The affected eight horses (Prince Tains, Chestnut, Black Don, Aristocrat, Jai, Land Tax, Gay Felt and Akbar) will take a break until maintenance works can be scheduled. This means the ride will be able to continue running during Floriade and the school holidays.
🌷 Natural Nine High Tea: Celebrate the arrival of spring with our Natural Nine Floriade About Town special! This exclusive menu is available for a limited time, from September 13th to October 12th. Due to high demand, we recommend booking your table now to avoid disappointment.
