October 30

Hello Canberra,

📆 Today: It’s Thursday, 30 October.

☁️ Weather: 22° and partly cloudy.

Coming Up: 🖤💛♥️ AIATSIS Indigenous Art Market

Canberra’s largest in-person Indigenous art market is back next weekend. Held annually since 2014, the AIATSIS Indigenous Art Market showcases the incredible diversity and creativity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from across Australia. Importantly, 100 per cent of each sale goes directly to the artists. You’ll find paintings, sculpture, jewellery, fashion and homewares, along with live music and dance by First Nations performers and local food trucks. It runs from 7–9 November on the lawns of Acton Peninsula. Details here.

🍰 Canberra Eats

This week’s slice of foodie news:

Parlour Wine Room Closes: Parlour Wine Room in NewActon was recently listed for sale, but no buyer was found, and the business has gone into liquidation. The venue was due to host a sold-out, fully paid wine event this week. The only good news is that High Jinx bar, owned by the same business, has found a new owner. I’m sure the space won’t be empty for long—it just needs the right restaurateur. It’s a great location.

Tipsy Sundays: Tipsy Sundays are back at Amici. Sit back and enjoy the warmer weather with a cocktail or spritz and live music from 1–3pm. There’s also the option to try Amici’s Boozy Brunch with bottomless mimosas and cheese and charcuterie platters.

RNCAS Canberra and Region Wine Show: The Canberra and Region Wine Show will take place from 10–15 November at EPIC. As part of the event, there’s a public tasting session—enjoy some of the region’s finest wines, with the freedom to sample all the entries in this year’s show. Details here.

Thanksgiving at Catbird: Catbird has been serving up Southern Californian–inspired brunch in Parkes for the past couple of years. They’re once again hosting an all-you-can-eat Thanksgiving lunch for anyone missing—or curious to try—the classic North American feast with turkey, stuffing, sides and pies. Details here.

Twilight in the Gardens: After-work drinks are back at the Hyatt—Twilight in the Gardens runs every Friday from 5pm—sip champagne and enjoy small plates. Details here.

Wildflour Soft-Serve: Soft-serve has landed at Wildflour—and it’s in a croissant! French Vanilla, Belgian Chocolate, Biscoff Cream and Amazon Açaí served in a croissant cone or cup. It’s noice, it’s different, it’s unusual. Details here.

Smokeshow: The Truffle Farm is hosting Smokeshow next Saturday, with BBQ boards from Fun Guys, $10 wine tastings, live music and beers from BentSpoke. Details here.

Ona Halloween Coffee: Ona has released a special Supernatural coffee blend for Halloween—“devilishly smooth chocolate, a whisper of blackberry and a sinister warmth like red wine.” Details here.

Kids: 🐊 Mini Q Reopens Today

The newly redeveloped Mini Q play space for 0–6-year-olds at Questacon opens today after its first major refurbishment in 20 years. Highlights include the InQuestigator research vessel—where kids can climb aboard and set sail, a not-too-scary crocodile with eggs that can be X-rayed, a coral reef climber and a cave with campfire stories from Yuin Elder Aunty Lynne Thomas.

Coming Up: 🍿 Sunset Cinema

The pop-up outdoor cinema in the Botanic Gardens returns for another year with a program of new releases and classics—including holiday favourites Love Actually, Elfand The Holiday over Christmas. The program is now online with early-bird pricing available. The cinema opens on 20 November and runs over summer. Details here.

🪩 Nightlife

Instant Cabaret: See some of Canberra’s most flamboyant theatrical improvisers present a cavalcade of riotous short acts—this weekend’s performance will be the third show. Previous acts have included The Breakup Song Between the Liberals and the Nationals, APS6 by Billie Eilish and Slam Poets in Couples Therapy. Details here.

Hallyu! Opening Party: The National Museum will celebrate the launch of its next major exhibition, Hallyu! The Korean Wave, with a Korean-themed party. Hosted by SBS PopAsia’s Andy Trieu, it promises DJ sets, K-pop dance performances, photo booths and the flavours of Korea. Details here.

Cause: 🤕 VISIBLE – An Art Show for Migraine Research

One in five Australians is affected by migraine, yet the illness often remains misunderstood and unseen. VISIBLE is a one-night exhibition raising money for a dedicated migraine research grant via Migraine & Headache Australia and The Brain Foundation. Hosted by Canberra-based artist Zoee Mylordis of Studio Zoee—herself living with migraine—the event features more than 30 original artworks by Zoee and other artists, alongside artist-designed cards and gifts, an auction of signature art and hampers, live vinyl DJ sets, and Mediterranean-style catering by local chef Nathan Latham. Details here.
