Opening this weekend at CMAG, Taglietti: Life in Design celebrates Italian-born, Canberra-based architect Enrico Taglietti (1926–2019), who left an indelible imprint on Canberra. See rare drawings, models, photographs and personal objects, and trace Taglietti's journey from Ethiopia and Milan to Australia—revealing how global influences shaped icons such as Canberra's Cinema Centre and Sydney's St Anthony's Church.
The exhibition also debuts new architectural models created in partnership with the University of Canberra. A must-see for lovers of design, architecture and Canberra's cultural story. Details here.
Join Peter Maddison (Grand Designs Australia), Craig Reucassel (ABC's The War On Waste/The Chaser), and more special guests to explore the smart sides of sustainable building and living at the Sustainable House Day happening next weekend at the SLA's Display Village. Hear how to create your own climate-wise garden, take tours of sustainable houses, visit the Bee Hotel and more. There will also be activities running for kids, including an archaeological dig, face painting, and sustainable giveaways. Details here.
Some craft events coming up in Canberra for those looking to curl up with a new project during the cooler months:
Decal Decoration: Give an everyday cup a dash of Art Deco flair with artist Sarit Cohen at Craft + Design Canberra. You'll play with colour, pattern and layout, then slide custom decals onto pre-made bisque-fired cups. Sarit guides the process—you supply the creativity. Craft + Design will glaze and fire your handiwork after class, and a week later, your food-safe masterpiece will be ready to brighten your kitchen. Details here.
Visible Mending: In this workshop with artist Michele Grimston, you'll learn a range of techniques to darn, patch and reinforce old textiles to extend their life and add meaning and beauty to your everyday objects. Details here.
The Hearth Canberra: The Hearth is a new community gathering for slow crafts like crochet, scrapbooking, junk journaling, textile art and more. As this is a new group, I don't know too much about it—but if you go along, let me know how it is. Details here.
Crafty Cinema: Work on your craft project while watching a movie at Crafty Cinema. The lights are dimmed but not off, so you can stitch, knit, crochet and create. The next session is Sunday, June 15, screening 10 Things I Hate About You. Details here.
Public Mend: Repair and reimagine your clothes at the free Public Mend workshops, led by formally trained textile artist Emma Johnston. All skill levels welcome. Details here.
Space Junk: What goes up must come down… or does it? The Australian Highlightspodcast is doing a live recording at CMAG, exploring the problem of space junk with Dr Doris Grosse. She'll share her investigations into the where and what of orbital debris. Details here.
Cheng Lei: Journalist and recipient of the 2024 Press Freedom Award, Cheng Lei will be in conversation with Michael Hertel about her new book Cheng Lei: A Memoir of Freedom—the extraordinary true story of her life and how it was transformed when she was detained in China on false charges of espionage. Details here.
When Sleeping Women Wake: Author Emma Pei Yin will be in conversation with Ayesha Inoon about her debut novel When Sleeping Women Wake—an epic and emotional story of three spirited women—a mother, her daughter, and their maid—during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. Details here.
Pass this on to any teachers you know—The Street is holding a Teacher Comedy Night with award-winning comedian and ex-schoolteacher Daniel Delby.
