This week’s foodie news:
Bottomless Lasagne: Wakefield’s Bar (at Edgars in Ainslie) is introducing a bottomless lasagne night. The perfect comfort food for a cold winter night—enjoy 90 minutes of unlimited lasagne, paired with a fresh seasonal salad, for $29 per person. It’s happening Thursday July 10. Bookings are recommended. Details here.
Christmas in July at the Hyatt: Experience the magic of a Northern Hemisphere Christmas at the Hyatt this July. Indulge in classic Christmas dishes with all the trimmings at the buffet, including a glass of mulled wine on arrival. Details here.
Winter Wine Series: Escape the cold and head to the Hyatt for a complimentary fireside wine tasting every Friday from 5:00pm–6:00pm in the historic Griffin’s Lounge. Coming up on July 4: Eden Road Wines. Details here.
Forage Price Cap: The Forage street food festival is happening on July 19 in the city. In a positive move for the festival, they’ve introduced an $18 price cap on dishes. I’m hoping we’ll see a range of smaller, cheaper options, so you can try more from different vendors.
Capital Brewing X Boilermaker: Capital Brewing and Riverbourne Distillery are coming together for a special night of beers and whiskeys. Riverbourne is Australia’s highest-altitude distillery, located in Jingera just south of Captain’s Flat. Enjoy a pairing of four Riverbourne whiskeys with four Capital Brewing beers alongside a presentation by distiller Martin Rye. Details here.
Lots of interesting events for readers coming up:
Kerrie Davies: Kerrie Davies will be in conversation with Michelle Staff about her new book Miles Franklin Undercover: The little-known years when she created her own brilliant career. After the success and celebrity of her coming-of-age novel My Brilliant Career, published when Miles Franklin was only 21, she disappeared. This is the story of the decade that made her second career as a fearless advocate for working women. Details here.
Broke Road: Bestselling crime author Matthew Spencer returns to The Book Cow to launch his second book, Broke Road. Matt will be joined by writer, broadcaster, and arts advocate Barbie Robinson for an in-conversation style evening. Details here.
The Peak: Sam Guthrie will be in conversation with Mark Kenny about his gripping new espionage thriller and debut novel, The Peak. Written with extraordinary insider knowledge of China, global power dynamics, and the inner workings of the Australian Government, The Peak weaves a story of friendship, love and betrayal. Details here.
Anzac Guerrillas: Join author Edmund Goldrick for a book signing to mark the release of his new book, Anzac Guerrillas, at the National Library. Anzac Guerrillas is the incredible true story of how a handful of escaped Australian soldiers became resistance fighters, double agents and spies in Yugoslavia during World War II. Details here.
If you’ve yet to tour Lanyon Homestead, Calthorpes' House or Mugga-Mugga Cottage, ACT Historic Places is offering a pretty good incentive over the cooler months—tours are half-price and at Lanyon Homestead enjoy a tour, hot drink and sweet treat for only $15. I last toured Calthorpes' House on a primary-school excursion—pretty sure I’d appreciate it a lot more now! Details here.
E-Bikes Coming to Canberra?
The ACT Government has opened bids for new operators to run e-scooters and now e-bikes. Ario says it will bid for both permits. Canberra’s last bike venture collapsed in 2023—it was poorly run with a terrible app and limited bikes. While in Lyon recently I saw a very popular docked scheme where every bike must be returned to a rack (which are all over the city), keeping the streets tidy. Maybe Canberra should borrow that idea?
More Trivia: Thanks to Jeremy, who replied to yesterday’s issue to recommend (in his own way) the Tuesday night trivia at the Old Canberra Inn: "Tuesday night trivia at the OCI is run by a loud American who hasn't won or even been on Mastermind and can't even win the worst pub quiz in the ACT or NSW (the one at the RUC). He also doesn't even write the quizzes - so you can expect mispronunciations, flubs, and poorly thought out takes on the nationhood of the component countries of the UK.”
🧑‍⚖️ The Jury Experience: Step into the heart of a high-stakes trial with The Jury Experience. In this live theatre show, you are the jury—the power to deliver justice is entirely in your hands. You’ll examine every piece of the puzzle, from witness testimonies to forensic data, and ultimately decide: guilty or innocent? Details here.
