There’s a new way to explore Canberra’s wine region—Winehopper is a hop-on, hop-off winery tour where you can visit the wineries around Murrumbateman at your own pace. The bus departs from the city and stops at various cellar doors throughout the day (multiple times) before returning to Civic in the afternoon. It’s a great option if you’re keen to spend a day in wine country but don’t have a big group or a designated driver. Details here.
Looking for a good-quality trivia night in Canberra? Trivial Excuse runs quizzes written by season 6 Mastermind winner and ACT & NSW quiz champ Michael Logue—so you can expect a solid challenge with well-written questions. They currently host trivia on Tuesdays at Milky Lane in Braddon.
Let me know if you recommend any other trivia nights around town.
Since sharing lots of holiday activities in June 18’s issue, I’ve come across many more:
Peculiar Parents: Join children’s book author Stephanie Owen Reeder and illustrator Ingrid Bartkowiak at the National Library as they uncover the perfectly peculiar world of Australian animal families in their new book Peculiar Parents. Hear all about eye-catching animal antics, bountiful burrows, magnificent mums and doting dads—followed by a hands-on craft activity. There’ll also be a special meet-and-greet with animals from the Canberra Reptile Zoo. Details here.
The Mint: The Mint is running a range of activities for children of all ages. In Mini Minties, kids aged 3–5 can explore the unusual shapes and colours of coins through craft and storytelling. Mintventures, for ages 6–12, is all about coins, codes and spies. There’s also a coin swap where kids can trade a used coin for a brand-new one of the same value. Details here.
Botanic Gardens: MEGAfauna is returning to the Botanic Gardens. All through July, encounter the massive megafauna that once roamed Australia. Compare today’s animals with their extinct ancestors, investigate fossil evidence, and follow the MEGAfauna statue trail. Details here.
Yoga & Book Illustration: The Museum of Australian Democracy is running two activities these school holidays—a book illustration workshop for kids aged 5–12 with children’s book creator Max Hamilton and a yoga and mindfulness class, especially for children. Details here.
Quizzic Alley: Canberra’s Harry Potter shop, Quizzic Alley, is running wand-making and potions classes during the holidays. Details here.
Kids Cooking Classes: Nutrition Australia is running cooking classes for kids aged 8–12. Students will build kitchen skills and confidence while making a main and a dessert. Details here.
The ACT Budget: Treasurer Chris Steele handed down the ACT Budget yesterday. The ABC has rounded up the key takeaways. More.
Canberra Theatre Turns 60: The Canberra Theatre turned 60 yesterday—it opened June 25, 1965. I found it amusing that during the performance of Swan Lake, Canberrans—described as “barbarians” by a journalist—applauded in all the wrong places. More.
🧑‍⚖️ The Jury Experience: Step into the heart of a high-stakes trial with The Jury Experience. In this live theatre show, you are the jury—the power to deliver justice is entirely in your hands. You’ll examine every piece of the puzzle, from witness testimonies to forensic data, and ultimately decide: guilty or innocent? Details here.
