It's looking like a fairly quiet weekend in Canberra, but I've added some extra ideas below. Event-wise, there's the German Winter Markets, a couple of Winter Solstice events, and the CraftAlive expo at EPIC.
Get the full rundown of weekend events.
Canberra quietens down in winter, but there are still plenty of things to keep you entertained. I've shared many of these ideas in past issues, but I think they're worth revisiting:
Hunt for Truffles: You can take part in a truffle hunt at the Majura Park Truffle Farm, or visit the Fun Guys burger stand at the farm to enjoy a truffle menu. Details here.
More Truffles & Wine: Next door at Mount Majura Vineyard, you can enjoy a Truffled Brie and Wine Tasting. Details here.
See the Taglietti Exhibition: Gain a deeper appreciation of some of Canberra's most iconic buildings at the Taglietti exhibition on now at CMAG. Details here.
Snow Play at Corin: Head to Corin for snow play, toboggans, and other winter fun. You'll need to book—I checked, and there are still spots available for the weekend. Details here.
Dine by the Fire: Enjoy a cosy long lunch at the refreshed Parlour Wine Room by the fire on Sundays from 11:30am to 4:30pm. Parlour has new owners and a new menu.
Cézanne to Giacometti: Have you seen the NGA's latest blockbuster exhibition? Details here.
Watch a Film at Elsie's or the NFSA: Visit the retro pop-up community cinema to catch a classic film in cosy surroundings. Details here.
Or visit the NFSA for their Winter Film Series, and make sure you stop by the Meltedpop-up to grab a toastie before the film (open 10am–2pm weekends). Details here.
Escape the Cold: Winter is the perfect time to book in an escape room. I've tried the Riddle Room in Mitchell and Escape Rooms Canberra in Phillip—both are great.
Treat Yourself to a Hot Chocolate: Stop by Canberra's own chocolate maker, Jasper and Myrtle, at Dairy Road to enjoy a hot chocolate. You'll also find them at the Capital Region Farmers Market on Saturday morning.
Tim Freedman (of The Whitlams fame) is coming to Canberra as part of the Smith’s@Belco program. In this stripped-back session, he'll take you on a journey through his repertoire, share new tales from his adventures in showbiz, and reveal untold stories about the genesis of some of the best-known Whitlams songs. There are just a few tickets left. Details here.
More than 7,500 kilos of vintage clothing will be on display next week at the Kilo Clothing Sale, where—as the name suggests—everything is sold by the kilo. Details here.
And this Sunday, the Three Sixty Fashion Market is on from 10am–3pm at the Fitters Workshop in Kingston.
Each year, the Friends of the Arboretum partner with an embassy to bring the forests alive with colour. Trees are wrapped in vibrant, knitted and crocheted scarves, adding a touch of whimsy to winter. This year, the Friends have partnered with the Republic of Korea. Along the cutting leading to the Arboretum Visitors Centre, you'll see displays featuring Korean national icons during Warm Trees, running from July 1–10. Details here.
Lantern and Fan Making for Kids: As part of the Warm Trees event, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea is hosting kids' workshops at the Arboretum. Make a Cheongsachorong—a traditional Korean lantern made with red and blue silk—and a Minhwa (Korean folk art) folding fan. Details here.
There are just a handful of tickets left for James May's (of Top Gear fame) live show. He'll bring to life the stories of extraordinary explorers who traversed deserts, scaled mountains, and sailed into the unknown. The show combines theatrical techniques with James' charismatic storytelling to create an evening of compelling intellectual entertainment. It's happening August 2. Details here.
🎻 The Music of John Williams - LIVE with Full Orchestra: From galaxy-shaking Star Wars themes to the roar of Jurassic Park, the adrenaline of Indiana Jones to the magic of Harry Potter – this concert brings John Williams' greatest scores to life in a symphonic celebration of cinema. July 24/25, 7:00pm. Llewellyn Hall, ANU. Details here.

Celebrate Pride Month lakeside with Diversity ACT and Tuggeranong Arts Centre. Meet in the Arts Centre car park at 11:15 am for a relaxed 2.2 km stroll, ride or jog to Tuggeranong Beach and back. Afterwards, settle in for a cuppa, light refreshments and a rainbow-flag craft session. It's free, all ages are welcome, and loud, blingy rainbow attire is highly encouraged. Details here.
Bogong Moths: Bogong moths migrate through Canberra in spring on their way to cooler alpine caves and were once a major food source for Ngunnawal people. In a remarkable discovery, scientists have found that Bogong moths actually use the stars to navigate to a specific place they've never been before. Details here.
Defibs on LBG: Two life-saving AEDs (automated external defibrillators) have been installed on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. One is near Curio Press Cafe on the northern side of the lake, and the other is near The Jetty on the south side. With thousands of people walking, running and visiting the lake each week, I'm surprised they weren't installed sooner! The installation was made possible through a partnership between the NCA and StreetBeat.
The Adrenalin Plus Rail Jam: Twenty years ago, Adrenalin Plus Boardstore hosted the first urban rail jam—fans packed into a Braddon car park to watch snowboarders drop down a man-made snow slope and ride a rail (jibbing). Mustard Flats has made a short doco on this niche part of Canberra's history. Do you remember this?Details here.
