This week’s serving of foodie news:
Muk Bar: Vincent in Barton recently closed, but the owners are back with a new venture—Muk Bar—promising “not your average Korean”. Menu items include Korean beef tartare, spicy beef intestine fried rice, a duck bulgogi taco and abalone liver pasta—it’s certainly an interesting lineup. And if you’re missing Vincent’s vanilla crème brûlée, they’re putting a corn crème brûlée on the menu too. Opens 5 August with limited seating to start. You can see the menu here.
The Lotus Indian: A new modern Indian bar and restaurant opens in Griffith today, where Aubergine used to be. Details here.
Restaurant Awards: Two Canberra restaurants are finalists in this year’s Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Awards. Lunetta (Red Hill) is up for Best New Restaurant, and Benn and Mork Ratanakosol of MĂnima (Yarralumla) are up for Restaurant Personality of the Year. The winners will be announced in August.
Cinnascroll is coming to Canberra: Starting out in Merrylands, Cinnascroll is a popular cinnamon scroll shop in Sydney. Flavours include pecan and caramel, blueberry, Biscoff and, of course, classic. Cinnascroll is opening soon at the Canberra Centre.
Azuma Den: Azuma Den is taking over the former Muse space at East Hotel—serving Korean and Japanese dishes cooked over a fire grill. It’s opening next month.
Contentious Character x Pialligo Estate: Enjoy a thoughtfully crafted five‑course seasonal menu, paired with premium Contentious Character wines. The wine dinner is happening on 29 August at Pialligo Estate. Details here.
Flute Fix: While researching that Contentious Character dinner, I also noticed Pialligo Estate is running “The Flute Fix”—every Saturday and Sunday, a long lunch with a seasonal shared plates menu and bottomless bubbles for $99 per person. Details here.
Opening next weekend at CMAG, Australia’s Home Front: 1939–1945 marks 80 years since the end of World War II. The exhibition explores fascinating stories from the war years in Canberra and beyond—told through objects collected by local historian Rohan Goyne. Details here.
Australia’s Got Talent finalist and internationally acclaimed illusionist Michael Boyd is bringing his spectacular show Mystique to Canberra. Expect jaw-dropping escapes, levitations, transformations, and mind-blowing illusions packed with special effects. Details here.
G for George: The iconic fuselage of the Lancaster bomber G for George is making its historic return to the War Memorial this morning. It will be installed as the centrepiece of the new Australians in Bomber Command gallery, opening in 2026. The aircraft is expected to pass in front of the Memorial between 10:15am and 10:35am if you'd like to catch a glimpse. Details here.
There may be slight traffic delays this morning between 9:45am and 10:30am as the special delivery travels along the Federal Highway, Majura Parkway, and Fairbairn Avenue.
Prohibition Orders: There’s been a sharp increase in prohibition orders issued to Canberra hospitality businesses over the past financial year. More.
This Saturday, grab a coffee at Cafe Stepping Stone in Dickson—the social enterprise providing employment opportunities for migrant and refugee women—then browse the For Purpose Market in the DKB Community Hall next door. The market features other social enterprises, plus a second-hand clothing stall and mending station. Details here.
🧑‍⚖️ The Jury Experience: Step into the heart of a high-stakes trial with The Jury Experience. In this live theatre show, you are the jury—the power to deliver justice is entirely in your hands. You'll examine every piece of the puzzle, from witness testimonies to forensic data, and ultimately decide: guilty or innocent? Details here.
