The National Library’s next exhibition, 1975: Living in the Seventies, explores life in that transformative year. It captures the upheaval of 1975—from the end of the Vietnam War and Whitlam’s dramatic dismissal to the rise of the women’s liberation movement, soaring energy prices, and pop‑culture breakthroughs. This free exhibition opens on 14 August. Details here.
This week’s foodie news:
Tintino Opens: Wine shop and restaurant Tintino has opened in Kingston. You can check out its menu of small shared plates on its website. Details here.
The Tipsy Mug: A new café has opened in Gungahlin. They’re hosting a grand opening this Saturday—enjoy a free coffee from 7am to 3pm. Details here.
Garage Eats: A new food hub is opening in City East. Tucked away off London Circuit, it’s located at street level under a new multi-storey parking garage on the corner of Nangari Street and Rabaul Lane. The concept was inspired by Melbourne’s underground car park eateries like Soi38. Melted—known for their toasted sandwiches in Fyshwick—has been announced as the first vendor. I’ll let you know when it opens.
Tangelo Day: Each year, to make their classic gin, Canberra Distillery peels over 100 tangelos—and they need your help. Join them for a day at the distillery: help peel tangelos, snack on nibbles, and sample plenty of gin. Details here.
Tastes of Tuscany: Learn the essentials of Tuscan cooking from local chef Cam Jones at the Tastes of Tuscany workshop hosted by 10 Yards. It’s in November—these events at 10 Yards always book out well in advance, so I’m giving you plenty of notice. Details here.
BBQ Town: A new Korean BBQ buffet has opened at Westfield Belconnen. Book a 90-minute session and enjoy a wide buffet selection of meats and vegetables to grill at your table. Details here.
There’s plenty coming up for film aficionados:
SFC Film Festival: The Space Faring Civilisation (SFC) Film Festival is back for National Science Week, celebrating science, space exploration, and hopeful storytelling. Catch a curated selection of 17 short films envisioning a positive future. Details here.
Gang Gang Movie Night: Gang Gang in Watson is launching a free monthly movie night on the last Wednesday of each month. They’re kicking things off with Napoleon Dynamite on July 30. Details here.
Latin American Film Festival: The ANU Film Group is once again hosting the Latin American Film Festival this August, with 13 films screening—free entry for all. Films are shown in their original language with English subtitles. Details here.
The ANUFG has also released its Spring Season Program, featuring a diverse lineup of 51 films. Details here.
RunNation: This original documentary film festival—founded by Sydney runners eight years ago—features a curated 2-hour screening of short films about running and the human spirit. It’s coming to Capital Brewing this August. Details here.

The Vault Continues: It looks like The Vault event space at Dairy Road isn’t going anywhere just yet. Although it had closed in preparation for future development, a new lineup of events to see out 2025 has been announced—including the Second Life Markets and a Dragon Dreaming warehouse party.
Bleachers Bar Has Closed: City sports bar Bleachers has shut its doors. While city construction was blamed (and no doubt played a part), the venue always struggled to find its footing—competing with nearby staples like King O’Malley’s and PJ’s. Rumour has it a steakhouse may be moving in. If you’re after a solid sports bar alternative, I’d try Caribou in Kingston!
