Presented by three-time ARIA Award-winners Monsieur Camembert, the concert offers a thrilling reimagining of Cohen's songs, brought to life with a powerhouse 10-piece band, a choir, and a stellar lineup of guest vocalists. Following sold-out seasons at the Sydney Opera House, State Theatre, and City Recital Hall, the production is coming to Canberra in October. Details here.
Mexican wrestling returns to Canberra in August when Lucha Fantastica presents a circus show. It's a mix of physical skill, comedy, spectacle, and acrobatics, featuring more than 10 masked luchadores. Details here.
Just a selection of interesting events coming up:
Jack Heath: Local award-winning author Jack Heath will be in conversation with Amy Laurens about his latest novel Doctor Who: Frankenstein and the Patchwork Man, in which the titular Time Lord comes face to face with Mary Shelley's monstrous creation. Come dressed as your favourite Doctor, browse a selection of themed jewellery, and get your photo taken with a life-size TARDIS. Details here.
Jeff Koons: Join leading contemporary American artist Jeff Koons—most well known for his fun balloon animal sculptures—in conversation with National Gallery Director Dr Nick Mitzevich. Details here.
Queer Threads: Join artist Henry Shawcross in transforming scraps of fabric into a symbol of queer pride with textile collage. In this workshop, breathe new life into discarded textiles and learn accessible stitching techniques to design and create your own pride patch or badge. Details here.
Mariana Enríquez: Argentine journalist, novelist, and International Booker Prize–shortlisted author Mariana Enríquez will be in conversation with Dr Fabricio Tocco about her latest collection of short stories, A Sunny Place for Shady People, and will discuss her extensive body of work. Details here.
Preview Anzac Hall: The Australian War Memorial is hosting a symposium to commemorate 80 years since the end of the Second World War. During the symposium, Memorial historians and curators will reflect on the significance of Australia's Second World War experience and provide a preview of some of the new stories and individual accounts from the forthcoming exhibitions: Australians in Bomber Command, Sydney Harbour Under Attack, and The Battle of Milne Bay, which will be on display in the Memorial's new Anzac Hall. Details here.
Undercurrent Market: One of Canberra's most popular maker markets, Undercurrent has been gifted by the current owners and organisers to local creative organisation Craft + Design Canberra. The next market will be held in November—I was a little disappointed to hear it will be at The Vault in Dairy Road for a second year. It was too crowded last time, and as the best quality market with incredible artists, it deserves a bigger space.
What Canberrans Can Expect: The ABC has put together a roundup of what election commitments Canberrans can expect from the Federal Government. More.
Report a Wombat: Wombat Rescue, in partnership with the ACT Government, has established a wombat reporting portal. Sightings will help the ACT Government and wildlife groups document where wombat populations are occurring and whether they are healthy. The portal will be monitored by wildlife groups who can locate and assess sick wombats quickly. It can be used to report both sick and healthy wombat sightings around the ACT. Details here.
The Walk for Hope raises money for Karinya House, which offers support for women experiencing disadvantage before or after pregnancy, ensuring they are never alone in their journey. Sign up and walk/run on September 14. Details here.
