Cancon, Australia's largest and longest-running tabletop games convention is happening this weekend at EPIC. The event features miniatures tournaments, card games, board games, and role-playing games (like Dungeons & Dragons). Entry for spectators is free. Details here.
One of Cancon's highlights is the Games Library. Launched in 2013 with just 36 tables, it has grown to include over 100 tables and more than 500 board games available to play. It's a fantastic way to discover new games, whether you're playing with your own group or joining other tables looking for players. Details here.
Canberra's Good Food Guide Winners: The 2025 Australian Good Food Guide awards were announced on Friday, with 21 Canberra restaurants making it into this year's guide. Raku, Otis, The Boat House, Les Bistronomes, and Pilot each earned two hats. Pavilion at Pialligo Estate and Rakkas in Kingston were new additions to this year's guide. See the full list of ACT winners here.
Wild Duck is Closing: The Wild Duck Chinese restaurant in Kingston has announced they will be closing on January 25. They will be holding a farewell celebration this Saturday. Details here.
There were a few kids’ events I missed in yesterday's issue:
Lizards and Stick Insects: The Ginninderry Conservation Trust is running a Blue Tongue Lizard and Leaf/Stick Insect Interactive Experience. Details here.
Waterbugs at Tidbinbilla: There will be a free pop-up waterbug activity in the Tidbinbilla Sanctuary today (sorry for the late notice). Children can net and discover the amazing world of waterbugs. It's happening as a drop-in activity between 10am-1pm. Follow the signs to the Reading Man.
Stadium Golf: Tee off from various points around Canberra stadium, hitting balls onto the field to score points. Details here.
Canberra Olympic Pool is hosting a family fun day this Sunday. Bring your family and friends for a swim and relax under the sun (forecasted to be 31°). There will also be water inflatables and a BBQ (gold coin donation). Details here.
An hour and a half drive south of Canberra near Cooma, you'll find the little village of Numeralla. This weekend is the 48th folk festival hosted in Numeralla. It's billed as being one of the last traditional folk festivals in Australia. There are no tickets, you don't need to book, and it's completely free. Details here.
A prime city block has been sold to the Capital Property Group for $66 million. The site, located between City Hill and the lake, will sit alongside the future light rail route. Plans include six buildings, including four residential towers, a hotel, office space and a park. More.
