This week’s serving of foodie news:
Tikka Stand is Turning 10: Indian food truck Tikka Stand is turning 10, and they’re celebrating next Saturday with a street party at their Lonsdale Street location. They’ll be giving away 250 free meals from 5–7pm, and there will be live Bollywood dancing, henna art and exciting giveaways. Details here.
Kanpai & Canapés: Indulge in a 3-hour tasting journey when the Australian Sake Festival stops by Canberra. There will be over 100 of Japan’s most celebrated sakes and fruit liqueurs to try alongside an endless flow of bite-sized creations. It’s happening on 18 October. Details here.
Floriade Water: When visiting Floriade this year, keep an eye out for Floriade Water—a collab with BentSpoke—which is a floral, lightly sparkling Canberra water in a can.
BBQ Platters: I’ve been craving American-style BBQ recently, so I was excited to learn about these BBQ Boards by Fun Guys at the Truffle Farm in Majura. You can pre-order for pickup on Sundays (perfect for Father’s Day), bring a picnic rug and enjoy a feast of brisket, ribs, sausages, cornbread, mac and cheese, tiramisu and more. As well as the BBQ boards, Fun Guys sells burgers and brekky rolls from 8:30am–3:30pm, Wednesday–Sunday. Details here.
Cook & Co up for Sale: Canberra’s one-stop shop for weird, wonderful and trendy cooking ingredients, Cook & Co (previously known as The Essential Ingredient), is up for sale. The current owners have been running the store for 15 years.
Charles Heidsieck x Leyla: Leyla Bar in Barton is hosting a guided tasting of three premium Charles Heidsieck champagnes paired with small bites. Details here.
Stein Time: BentSpoke has released Stein Time, a crisp German-style lager. It’s available for a limited time in cans and on tap. Details here.
Next Saturday, Alliance Française, the Croatian Club and Polish White Eagle Club are hosting the European Festival in Turner. Experience a little bit of European culture right here in Canberra with a day of food, drinks, dancing, music and fun activities. Details here.
Three Canberra couples have turned a single-home block in the inner north into a demonstration cohousing project. Each has a private 100-square-metre unit plus shared common facilities. More.
It’s not the only one: Cohousing Canberra is planning a 30-unit community in Watson. Unlike a typical block of flats, these co-housing developments have more shared spaces like common rooms, communal gardens, art studios and orchards. While many developments include some common facilities, the real difference with these projects is that they are driven by a cooperative resident community, not by developers. I think they’re a great idea!
Cohousing-style living isn’t new in Canberra, either. Urambi Village and Wybalena Grove, both built in the 1970s as co-operative housing, were designed around shared car-free open space and communal facilities.
The Canberra Brave are aiming to defend their title at the AIHL Finals in Melbourne this weekend. In Canberra, the best place to watch is at Caribou in Kingston. The Brave play at 6pm on Saturday; if they win, the grand final is at 2pm on Sunday.
Fancy a walk this weekend? The Red Hill Summit Track has been completely rebuilt. Hundreds of new timber steps and a sturdier, more durable track surface have been added, along with improved drainage. The stepped section has been widened to 2.4 metres, so there’s plenty of room for groups and families. The track is also dog-friendly (on-leash). It’s a steep walk, but the spectacular views at the top are worth it. Details here.
City Parking: A little bit of extra parking has opened near the city—just in time for Floriade. There are 200 spaces that were previously used by CIT Reid staff and are now open to the public. The car park is accessible from Constitution Avenue, open 24/7 and is currently free! Details here.
🧑‍⚖️ The Jury Experience: Step into the heart of a high-stakes trial with The Jury Experience. In this live theatre show, you are the jury—the power to deliver justice is entirely in your hands. You'll examine every piece of the puzzle, from witness testimonies to forensic data, and ultimately decide: guilty or innocent? Details here.
