Namadgi National Park is celebrating its 40th birthday this year. The park was gazetted in 1984 and has become a beloved part of the ACT. Namadgi will be holding a Birthday Party next weekend at the Namadgi Visitor Centre. There will be a special display showcasing the history of the park, a birthday cake and some special activities. Details here.
And with the election looming, here’s a lesson from history on unpopular policy ideas—In 1995, Liberal MLA Gary Humphries floated the idea of gutting ACT Parks and Conservation and handing over Namadgi to NSW. As you can imagine, outrage ensued, with the Labor opposition accusing the Government of attempting to give away half of the ACT. The backlash was swift, and the plan was abandoned just a day after it was announced.
There’s a classic car display, the Woodcraft Guild exhibition, The Boy From Oz and more happening this weekend in Canberra. Get the full rundown of weekend events here.
Civic Art Bureau is a new gallery opening above Smith’s Alternative in the Melbourne Building. Starting today is Exhibition No. 1 featuring works by eleven distinguished local artists. Details here.
Here’s something different: Celtic Illusion combines contemporary Irish dancing with Las Vegas-style illusions. It’s coming to Canberra for one day only tomorrow (apologies for the late notice). Details here.
The latest block of exhibitions has opened at the M16 Art Space in Griffith. The exhibitions are running from now until October 27. See them here.
