At just under six square metres, the Gallery of Small Things is Canberra's smallest gallery, featuring unique work from both emerging and established artists. With the holiday season approaching, their Christmas show, Deck the Small, offers pieces that make perfect, one-of-a-kind gifts. The Gallery of Small Things is in Watson and is open from Thursday to Sunday. Details here.
The Community Toolbox, Canberra's first tool and equipment library, is celebrating its third birthday today! Since opening, over 7000 loans have been made to more than 600 members.
To mark the occasion, the Toolbox is hosting an open day on November 23, from 10 am to 5 pm. Visitors can take guided tours, watch tool demonstrations, and even try out tools in a safe, supportive environment—perfect if you've ever wanted to use a particular tool but felt uncertain. And to top it off, pie makers and waffle irons will be on hand to keep everyone well-fed! Details here.
The MusicACT Music Awards celebrate the achievements of the ACT music industry. There are seven awards in total, including Artist of the Year, DJ of the Year, and Live Act of the Year. The nominees have been chosen and are available online. The public is invited to vote in several of the categories, and the winners will be announced at an event at the Vault on December 3. Details here.
Australian music royalty will be coming to Canberra! Richard Clapton & Daryl Braithwaite will be bringing their shows to the Canberra Theatre in February. Tickets are now on sale.
Subscriber Gary asked: Can anyone shed any light on when the Carillon holds its recitals?
The National Carillon has been undergoing extensive repairs on its concrete façade, which had been behind scaffolding since 2019. Those exterior repairs wrapped up in August, but work continues inside, including replacing parts in the instruments. This work is expected to be completed by early 2025. Carillonists may be practising and testing, though no recitals are scheduled for the rest of 2024.
The NCA has announced that regular recitals will resume in early 2025, and I'll be sure to include these events in the digest.
Feel free to reply to this email if you have any more information on when the Carillon will be back in action.
Folk Festival Funding: The National Folk Festival will receive funding of $120,000 from the Federal Government's Revive Live grants. The festival had struggled with a decline in ticket sales at this year’s festival resulting in a loss of $450,000.
Legislative Assembly Opens Today: The Eleventh Legislative Assembly will meet for the first time today. At the meeting, members will be sworn in, and the Chief Minister will be elected (the ACT is the only place that elects, rather than appoints, the head of government). The ministers are expected to be announced after the sitting. More.
