Here’s the weekly wrap of food and wine news happening around Canberra:
The Southern: There’s a new pub in Woden. The Southern has replaced Belluci’s. The menu has all the classic pub favourites as well as a few surprises like cheeseburger spring rolls and Adelaide’s famous Pie Floaters. And as a nod to the past, they’ve kept Penne Belluci on the menu! Details here.
Nick O’Leary Wins: The Nick O’Leary 2024 Riesling won Best Wine at the Canberra and Region Wine Show. The winery also picked up the Most Successful Exhibitor of the Show and Champion Wine of the Show. More.
Lazy Su Boozy Yum Cha: Leading up to Christmas, Lazy Su is doing a Boozy Yum Cha-inspired lunch. The set menu features a selection of Lazy Su favourites as well as free-flowing wines, beers and cocktails. Details here.
Lunetta Trattoria: The second dining venue in the iconic Red Hill lookout is now open. Lunetta Trattoria is a neighbourhood bar and restaurant offering a more laid-back vibe compared to Lunetta upstairs. Details here. (has anyone tried Lunetta yet? Let me know how it was.).
Asteri Greek Restaurant: Woden is getting a new Greek Restaurant from Tim Moustakas, who previously ran Filos at the Hellenic Club. I’ll have more details soon.
Free Coffee: El Pan is a new brunch cafe opening in Dickson. I don’t have any details about the menu yet, but they will be offering free coffee to celebrate their grand opening on November 21. Details here.
Soft-Serve Croissants: I came across this monstrous creation at Godiva in the city—a croissant filled with soft-serve ice cream and chocolate. Too much? Details here.
Supalove x Canberra Distillery: Supalove (Tiger Lane) is teaming up with The Canberra Distillery to offer a 3-course meal with 3 cocktails for $49. Details here.
Thanksgiving Buffet: I have more details on Catbird’s Thanksgiving Buffet—it’s happening from Thursday November 28 to December 1. The all-you-can-eat buffet is $77 per person (call or email to book). Details here.
Here’s a hidden gem in Canberra: Geoscience Australia in Symonston hosts the National Mineral and Fossil Collection. The entire collection contains over 1 million specimens, and 700 of these are on display in the public gallery, open Monday to Friday. Alongside the minerals and fossils, you’ll find scientific equipment, a rock garden, and a piece of moon rock brought back to Earth during the Apollo 17 mission on loan from NASA. It’s the only piece of moon rock in the Southern Hemisphere that you’re allowed to touch! Details here.
Nagi Maehashi from the popular food blog RecipeTinEats will be at Westfield Belconnen this weekend to celebrate the release of her latest cookbook TONIGHT. Details here.
Outer Space: Stromlo to the Stars is a new exhibition at CMAG that celebrates the 100-year anniversary of Mount Stromlo Observatory. Discover the role Mount Stromlo Observatory played during World War II, designing, producing and testing precision optical munitions for the war effort; challenge yourself on ‘Guide Star’ – a laser junk game developed specially for the exhibition; and be inspired by the Observatory’s latest collaborative astrophysical projects, including what will be the world’s largest telescope. Details here.
A related event: Nobel laureate and astronomer Professor Brian Schmidt will be in conversation with Annabel Crabb, taking you on a journey of the Observatory’s 100-year history. It’s happening next Monday. Details here.
Brisbane’s award-winning cult-cabaret show Bite Club is coming to Canberra this week, featuring music, circus, drag, burlesque, theatre, and comedy. Details here.
