It’s currently National Tree Week. Here’s a roundup of some of what’s happening in Canberra as part of tree week:
Parliamentary Timber Tours: Parliament House and Old Parliament House feature some beautiful timber from Australian trees. See living examples of these trees on a free guided walk at the National Botanic Gardens. Details here.
A Treemendous Day Out at Mulligans Flat: Enjoy a cuppa or breakfast with a plant sale and tree stall before embarking on one of two different guided tours. The Hollow Homes tour will let you look into the hollows of trees to see who’s home. The Woodland Ecology tour will dive a little deeper into the importance of Box Gum Grassy woodlands as an ecosystem. Details here.
Tree Week Story Time: ACT Libraries will be holding special Tree Week themed story time sessions this week. The Story Times are for kids aged 3-5. Details here.
Tube Stock Sale: Cool Country Natives is one of the best places to find native plants suited to the Canberra region. They are holding a 40% sale as part of Tree Week. Bring your own boxes and pick up Eucalyptus, Acacias, Callistemons, Dodonaea and many more trees. Details here.

Burley and Brave is a local business that makes Canberra-themed items. They have just released an adorable set of Canberra-themed miniatures for board games. The next time you play Monopoly or another game, you can now play as the Belconnen Owl, Black Mountain Tower, or even the Shine Dome. The set comes with eight 3D-printed miniatures. Find out more.
Gelato Messina has teamed up with Snapchat to give away free scoops on this Mates Day (May 8...M8?). Gelato Messina has created a new flavour inspired by vanilla slice, featuring vanilla custard gelato layered with passion fruit puree and crunchy caramelised puff pastry pieces.

The National Archives is holding a special craft workshop on Mother’s Day. Let your child’s creativity soar as they are guided through the creation of a one-of-a-kind reflective hanging mobile. The event is for children aged 4-12. Details here.
The year is 1999, and Shannon has a secret. Based on the best-selling memoir by award-winning journalist Shannon Molloy, Fourteen is the inspirational true story of growing up gay in central Queensland. Fourteen is on at the Canberra Theatre from the 9th to 11th May. Details here.
Next Friday there will be a thought-provoking forum on the role of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) in education at Questacon. Professor Genevieve Bell, Vice Chancellor of ANU, Professor Barney Dalgarno, Dean of Education, University of Canberra and Ruth Carr, Director Education and Outreach, CSIRO will be speaking.
The event is put on by the Rotary Club and money raised from ticket sales will help a young student to attend the National Youth Science Forum. Details here.
National Opera is the ACT’s professional opera company. They’ll be performing a tribute to Mothers: “Things My Mother Made” with a repertoire spanning classical arias, soul-stirring ballads, and uplifting anthems. Details here.
Federal Funding for Light Rail: The Federal Government has promised $50 million in funding for Stage 2B (Commonwealth Park to Woden) of Light Rail. The money will be used for planning and design. More.
Barista Battle: Ryan Nguyen from Ona Fyshwick is the ACT’s finalist in the Barista Battle latte art competition. He’ll be competing against the other state finalists this weekend in Melbourne. You can see more of his latte art here.
