The ACT Legislative Assembly passed a bill giving police new powers for dealing with drink driving. ACT Police can now impose immediate licence suspensions. First time low-range drink drivers will receive an immediate $800 fine and six-month loss of licence under the new infringement scheme. If they accept responsibility they won’t be required to attend court allowing both the police and courts to spend more time on other work.
Court ordered penalties have been increased significantly and the new laws will also expand roadside testing to include the ability for police to test for cocaine.
