News: 🥾 Geocachers to Descend on Canberra This Weekend

This weekend, over 1000 Geocachers will be coming to Canberra for the first Capital Geobash. Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity where participants use GPS coordinates to seek containers, known as "geocaches" or "caches," at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world.

There are more than 5000 geocaches hidden around the ACT, and it's one of the most densely populated geocaching locations in the world.

The Geobash will be opened by the Chief Minister this evening and it's expected to inject hundreds of thousands of dollars into the Canberra economy.

News: Floating Saunas Are Coming to Lake Burley Griffin

A floating sauna is expected to open on Lake Burley Griffin this July. They have signed a three-year licence with the National Capital Authority. The NCA asked for proposals for commercial floating saunas last year in October.

The floating platoon will be accessible via a gangway. Cold plunges into the Lake are optional!

The company behind the sauna currently runs them on Lake Derby in Tasmania. Floating saunas can be found in other cold cities including Helsinki, Stockholm and Seattle.

What's Open Today

While the supermarkets and shopping centres are closed, there are still plenty of things open around Canberra. National institutions like the National Gallery, Questacon and The War Memorial are all open.

The cinemas are all open.

Many cafes across Canberra are also opening today, and there are too many to list here. You'll have no problem finding a coffee in Braddon or Kingston.

News: Garema Place Hotel to be Operated by Crystalbrook Collection

The Garema Place hotel is currently under construction, and it has been announced Crystalbrook Collection will operate the hotel. Crytalbrook Collection is a boutique Australian hotel group. They currently run hotels in Cairns, Brisbane, Byron Bay, Newcastle and Sydney.

It's expected the hotel will open in 2027.

News: Western Australia Opens an Embassy in Canberra

The Government of Western Australia has established a 'hub' in Canberra, emphatically stating it’s not an Embassy. The WA Embassy will be used by WA groups looking to lobby in Canberra. More.

Something to do: Ralph Heimans Exhibition

The exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery features some of the most significant works from leading Australian portraitist Ralph Heimans. Works include paintings of Queen Mary of Denmark, King Charles III and Dame Judi Dench. Details here.
