Canberra’s iconic merry-go-round in Petrie Plaza is 110 years old. Yesterday, it celebrated 50 years in Canberra.
The historic carousel was built in 1914 and designed by Herbert Thomson for Anton Weniger, a German showman. Thomson also designed Australia’s first successful motor car.
It began its life in Melbourne before it was purchased for $40,000 at auction for the people of Canberra in 1973.
It was installed in Petrie Plaza as part of Canberra Day celebrations on March 13, 1974. Find out More.

Canberra’s pill-testing service, CanTEST, has found methamphetamine in a counterfeit diet pill. The pill had been purchased online and was expected to contain phentermine, which is prescribed in the treatment of obesity. The pills were brought in for testing by a “concerned parent” of a young person who had been taking the diet pills. More.
There is an antique and collectable fair happening this weekend at Albert Hall. There will be 22 local and interstate dealers selling antiques, books, art, jewellery, glassware and more. The fair is run as a fundraiser with money from the entry going to Rotary. Details here.
Plans have been released for upgrades to be made to the Dickson Shops. The paving will be upgraded to make it safer while still reusing the existing bricks. More planting will be added, and the existing trees will be preserved. The main square will be decluttered to align with the vision of establishing a ‘town square’ and ensure unobstructed views of the heritage-listed library. You can see the plans here.
