Do you remember the Birdman Rally? Every year from 1985 to 1992, thousands of Canberrans flocked to the shores of Lake Burley Griffin to watch The Birdman Rally. Entrants in the Rally would leap off a 10-metre-high platform in the hope of flying 50 metres and collecting $10,000 in prize money. After hitting the water, the ACT Water Police assisted the contestants back to shore, who used the event as a training exercise for their divers. Each Rally was recorded and broadcast by Capital 7. Find out more.
What do you think? Should the Birdman Rally once again be a Canberra Day event?

ACT Parks and Conservation has notified the public of unlicensed pest controllers operating in Canberra. These operators have been paid to remove possums from Canberra properties. After charging for the service and setting traps, they have not returned to deal with the possum. Sadly, on a number of occasions, this has led to the animal’s death.
Before hiring a pest controller to remove possums, make sure they are listed on this page. Even if they claim to have a license, only the operators on that page are licensed to remove possums in the ACT.
If you see a helicopter flying over the suburbs of the ACT in the next few weeks, chances are it’s part of Evo Energy’s aerial inspection program. The helicopter has a LiDAR Scanner that measures the distance between vegetation and powerlines. You can see which suburbs the helicopter is flying over and find out more about the program here.
