Looking for a challenge this long weekend? The Granite Tors Walking Track has recently undergone a series of upgrades, with some of the steepest sections being replaced with winding tracks and a more gradual incline.
The 8km (3-hour return) walk features a 400m climb past impressive granite boulders and ends at the former Orroral Geodetic Observatory. The cylindrical observatory was built in 1974 as part of a scientific agreement between the United States and Australia. A laser inside the now-defunct observatory bounced light pulses off reflectors on the moon that were placed during the Apollo missions. The observatory also housed four atomic clocks, one of which was designated Australia’s primary standard of time. Find out more.
