The ACT Government is expanding the stamp duty exemption scheme. First-time buyers who earn up to $250,000 annually qualify (total gross income of all home buyers and their partners), up from the previous $170,000 cap. Stamp duty will eventually be phased out over a 20-year period.
Stasia Dabrowski (1926-2020), known to generations of Canberrans as The Soup Lady, will have a statue built in her honour. For decades, she served homemade soup in Garema Place to people in need. She babysat and cleaned houses to afford the 180kg of vegetables needed to prepare the soup each week. By 2005, she was serving over 500 people, and community organisations had helped support her work.
A tender process will soon begin to choose the artist for the statue. It will be placed in Garema Place in early 2026. You can read more about her story here.

The historic mining town of Captains Flat is a 50-minute drive from Canberra. Apart from being the region's main weather station is situated, it's also home to the Captains Flat Hotel. The hotel has a unique claim to fame - at the time of construction in 1937, it had the longest bar in the southern hemisphere at 32 metres.
The hotel was closed around Covid times but it is finally reopening. It soft-opened this past weekend and will be officially opening this weekend. The website for the pub isn't working, but you can follow them on instagram.
