🪃 NAIDOC Week

It’s NAIDOC week - here are some of the events happening in Canberra:

Aboriginal Plant Use Walk: Adam Shipp is a proud Wiradjuri man and a keen interpreter of traditional Aboriginal plant use. On this interactive walk, you’ll learn about a range of important native plants found across Australia. More.

First Nations Experiences of Democracy Tour: On these special tours at The Museum of Australian Democracy, you’ll hear stories of how First Nations Australians have created change through activism. More.

NAIDOC in the North: A free, family-friendly event that celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture through story, song, art, dance and ceremony. It’s happening at Belco Arts. More.


Kids: ✈️ Canberra Airport Runway Tours

These school holidays, Canberra Airport will once again be running tours of the runway. The 30-minute bus tours will offer an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Airport operations. Details here.


Sports: Raiders Lose Fourth Game in a Row

The Raiders were defeated by the Newcastle Knights 16-12. This is the Raiders’ fourth loss in a row, and they sit 12th on the table. The Raiders have week off and their next game is against the Warriors on the 19th at home. Match report.

The Raiders will be at the Raiders Weston Club tonight from 6pm for a signing session.


Stage: 👻 The Woman in Black

The horror/thriller play based on Susan Hill’s acclaimed novel has been running on the West End for three decades. It’s coming to Canberra Theatre this week. Details here.


Concert: 🎻 Wonderful World

Wonderful World is an immersive “concert-show” by French star cellist Christian-Pierre La Marca. He’ll be performing next Saturday at the Snow Concert Hall. Details here.


Something to do: 📚 Shared Reading

Libraries ACT is launching a new shared reading program. The program is designed to support people of all ages, particularly those who are 60+, in building connections and reducing loneliness. It’s happening at Dickson and Tuggeranong libraries and starting on July 17th. Details here.


Tidbits:

Kanga Cup: The Kanga Cup is on this week at the Calwell, Dickson, Harrison, Lyneham, Mawson, and O’Connor ovals. With over 350 junior soccer teams from around Australia taking part, it’s the largest soccer competition in the southern hemisphere.

Increase in flu cases: There was a sharp 60% increase in influenza cases reported in the ACT in the last week according to ACT health reporting data.
