Work has begun on the Molonglo River Bridge project. The bridge will better connect the northern suburbs of Molonglo. It will replace the Coppins Crossing Bridge, which is flood-prone and subject to regular closures. The bridge will be above the 1-in-100-year flood zone for the Molonglo.
The bridge will be the tallest in Canberra and the fourth longest behind the Malcolm Fraser, Commonwealth Avenue and Kings Avenue bridges. The bridge will also be built to support any future light rail projects and will include shared cycleways and pathways.
The bridge is being built using weathering steel. Using weathering steel will provide long-term durability and will reduce maintenance costs. It will be the largest weathering steel bridge in Australia. Find out more about the project here.
