Here's the weekly wrap of Canberra's food news:
Monster Adds Meat: New Acton restaurant Monster made headlines when it switched to a vegetarian menu in 2020. They've decided to return to an omnivore menu but are still keeping many vegetarian dishes. Monster's new chapter is being led by new executive chef David Wykes, previously of Temporada.
38 Katsu: Verity Lane has a new vendor. 38 Katsu specialises in authentic Japanese and Korean katsu and udon noodles. Itβs from the same people behind the late-night izakaya-style restaurant Yakitori 38 which is just around the corner.
Buns on the Run: Akiba is now doing takeaway Bao buns - $20 for 3, takeaway only, Monday to Friday. More.
Free Food at Akiba: On December 23 Akiba is celebrating 10 years in Canberra by giving away free food all night long. All food will be free (drinks will still be charged), and patrons are encouraged to make a donation to Fly Program, a men's mental health charity. It will be strictly first-come-first-served from 7pm with a 1.5-hour dining time. Tables will be available for up to 5 people.
Wakefields x Mama Dough: Mama Dough will be taking over Wakefields Bar in Ainslie during December. Enjoy antipasti, wood-fired pizzas, handmade pastas and aperitifs. Details here.
Tumut River Brewing Returns: Regional brewer Tumut River Brewing Co announced they were closing in September. In good news, two former staff members at the brewery have bought the business back from the liquidators and will reopen the Tumut brewpub. The Kingston venue won't reopen.
Redbrick Coffee City: ARC Coffee in the city, a part of the iconic local roaster's group of cafes, has now been rebranded under the Redbrick name. Redbrick also operates cafes in Fyshwick and Curtin.
There's a Christmas Party happening in the city this Saturday. There will be live music, an axe-throwing pop-up, Christmas photos with Spider-Man (at Impact Comics), and food and drinks from local vendors. The Festive Lane markets in City Walk will also be running this Friday to Sunday. Details here.
The AIATSIS Indigenous Art Market is the largest Indigenous art market in the Canberra region. It's back this weekend on the lawns outside the Maraga building at 51 Lawson Crescent, Acton. The online market will also be available from December 6 to 15. Details here.
The National Film and Sound Archive is heating things up this summer with Hot Summer Nights, a curated selection of sizzling screenings with a healthy dose of nostalgia. Before each session there will be live performances or DJ sets in the courtyard and the cafe and bar will be open. Details here.
