News: Australia’s First Public Eating Disorder Treatment Centre
Work has finished on Australia’s first public 24/7 residential eating disorder treatment centre. The centre in Coombs will be able to house 12 patients and will begin accepting appointments from August 26. The ACT already runs the ACT Eating Disorders Clinical Hub where anyone in the ACT can refer themselves or someone they are concerned about for assessment and support. However, until now, many patients had to go interstate for acute care, with private health insurance only covering part of the treatment costs, which could be as high as $90,000. More.
News: 🧱 Brickworks Development Gets the Go-Ahead
The Yarralumla Brickworks redevelopment has been given the go-ahead after the approval of the Estate Development Plan. The historic 16.1-hectare site will be redeveloped by Doma, who won the tender in 2019. The precinct will feature around 380 residential dwellings, including houses, terraces and apartments. A significant portion of the site has been dedicated to public amenities such as cafes and community spaces. Most of the existing structures will be retained to preserve the site’s history. Details here.
The Yarralumla Brickworks, one of Canberra’s earliest building projects, opened in 1913 to produce the bricks used in constructing many of the city’s first buildings. The site closed in 1976 and has been mainly closed to the public since then. Over the years, numerous plans to redevelop the brickworks have been proposed, with news articles dating back to the 1980s advocating for its reuse. Work on the redevelopment of the Brickworks is anticipated to begin later this year.
