Construction began on the suburb of Kambah in 1974. This year Kambah is celebrating its 50th birthday. There are a number of activities coming up to celebrate the milestone:
Kambah Turns 50 Exhibition
Tuggeranong Arts is currently showing an exhibition featuring archival images, documents and artefacts from the residents of Kambah. The exhibition is running until October 12th. More.
Kambah Classic Car Show
There will be a classic car show happening on 31st August to celebrate the many classic cars owned by residents of Kambah. Details of the show are still being finalised, and I’ll have more information in an upcoming issue. More.
Kambah Village Fair
There will be a special market happening at Kambah Village on Saturday, 31st August, with market stalls, live music, kid’s activities and more. Details here.
P.S. - Have you heard the myth that Kambah is the biggest suburb in the southern hemisphere? The ABC looked into this a few years ago and found that there was no truth to it. No matter how you calculate it, there are several larger suburbs in Australia.
The National Film and Sound Archive is hosting a series of dementia-friendly film screenings, offering those living with dementia the chance to enjoy cinema alongside family, friends, and the community. Each screening begins with morning tea in the courtyard, followed by a brief introduction to the film. The movie features a short intermission, with low-level lighting maintained throughout and reduced sound volumes to ensure a comfortable experience. Details here.
After launching just a few months ago, Batik Air has reduced the number of direct flights between Canberra and Bali from three per week to two.
A fire broke out at the Ochre Medical Centre in Kippax on Tuesday morning. Approximately 30 people were evacuated. The fire spread into the roof of the building. ACT Fire and Rescue is investigating the cause of the fire. More.
Pilot has won ACT Restaurant of the Year at the Gourmet Traveller Annual Restaurant Awards. It’s the third time the Ainslie fine dining restaurant has been awarded at the annual event. Last year’s winner was Onzieme (Kingston). More.
Popular Canberra cafe group Eighty/Twenty have opened their latest location at 19 Mort Street in the City. It’s open on weekdays to cater to the office crowd. Details here.
Candlelight Concerts feature classical musicians surrounded by a stunning display of hundreds of candles. Don’t worry - The candles are all fake (LEDs), but they create a magical aesthetic. This Saturday is a Best of Fleetwood Mac concert. There are also Coldplay, Taylor Swift and Vivaldi events coming up. Details here.
Urgent Call for Blood Donors: There has been a surge in booking cancellations from blood donors who are suffering from the cold and flu. Lifeblood says an extra 200 blood donations are needed in the ACT this week to meet demand. You can find out more about donating blood here.
2 Years of CanTest: Australia’s first fixed drug-testing site has been operating for two years. The ABC reported on what has been detected through the service. More.
