Since 2020 methane emitted from the tip at Mugga Lane has been captured and converted into electricity. The gas capture facility will be upgraded. Two new gas-to-electricity generators as well as a 12-megawatt battery storage.
This will take the facility from generating 4 megawatts to 20 megawatts. This will power around 10000 homes in Canberra. The battery will also help stabilise the grid.
The upgrade should be online by the middle of next year. More.
CanTest, Canberra's drug testing service has detected a notable increase in the purity of both MDMA and cocaine. Some MDMA samples were found to be double the strength of what is typically detected. The higher potency increases the risk of overdoses.
Johnathan Davis resigned as an MLA for the seat of Brindabella earlier this month. We ran a simulator of the count back and Laura Nuttall of the Greens looks most likely to fill the vacancy. We got this result using a simulation that estimates the distributions. The actual count back may very well be different. It should also be noted that not all candidates may choose to put themselves in contention for the seat.
A large storm passed over Canberra yesterday. At least 22mm of rain was recorded at the airport and much of this fell within an hour. There were numerous reports of storm damage across the capital including an accident on the Monaro Highway between a car and motorbike.
The outdoor 'Sunset Cinema' is back in Canberra at the National Botanic Gardens. It's opening on the 23 November and will run until the end of February. Movies include Barbie, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, The Hunger Games as well as several festive movies over Christmas. There are drinks and snacks (including popcorn) available to buy. Dept of Rock – Public Service Battle of the Bands is a friendly competition that showcases the musical talents of public sector workers in the ACT while raising some money for local charities. Twenty-four amazing bands competed in 4 heats over October/November with 12 bands now moving into two semi-finals.
