A major storm hit Canberra last night around 8pm. There were widespread power outages across the capital, affecting over 13000 households. There have also been numerous reports of fallen trees, water damage and fallen power lines right across Canberra. Winds of 83km/h were recorded at Canberra Airport.
This New Year's Eve, there will only be fireworks at 9pm, with no fireworks at midnight. Previous attendance numbers have shown that Canberrans preferred the earlier showtime. There will be a longer fireworks display at nine instead of two shorter ones.
