What Happened in Canberra in 2023
Here are just some of the stories that people were talking about during 2023:
- The ACT Government took control of the Calvary Hospital. Plans were also announced for the new Northside Hospital to be built on the Bruce site.
- Canberra voted Yes for a Voice.
- The ACT introduced legislation to decriminalise small amounts of some drugs.
- In political news, Greens MLA Jonathan Davis resigned after allegations of misconduct emerged. The ACT Liberals dumped Jeremy Hanson as deputy leader.
- Pialligo Estate suddenly closed, leaving couples who had booked weddings scrambling to make alternate plans.
- We saw a return of international flights in Canberra with Fiji Airways beginning flights between Canberra and Nadi.
- Two club legends from The Raiders left the team. Jarrod Croker retired and Jack Wighton is moving to the Rabbitohs.
- It was a big year for Human Rights in Canberra. The age of criminal responsibility was raised from 10 to 12 (it will be raised to 14 in 2025). The ACT became the first jurisdiction to offer free abortions and legislation was introduced to protect intersex children.
- In green news the number of zero-emission vehicles on our roads doubled in 2023 and Canberra signed the contract for 'The Big Battery'.
- In December, a massive storm ripped through Canberra, leaving thousands of homes without power. A January storm caused flash flooding, including on Parkes Way and in The Canberra Centre.
Let me know what I missed.
