What’s Open in Canberra on Public Holidays

Galleries and Museums: All of Canberra’s public Museums and Galleries stay open on public holidays except for Christmas Day.

Supermarkets and Shopping: There are no retail trading restrictions in Canberra for public holidays. This means most shops and supermarkets remain open on most public holidays.

On Good Friday all the major supermarkets are closed. Many of the small IGA stores in the suburbs will be open.

On Anzac Day supermarkets are closed in the morning and open in the afternoon.

Public Transport: Public Transport runs on the Sunday timetable on Public Holidays. It’s best to check the Transport Canberra website for specific timetable information.

Easter and Anzac Day

This year, the Easter long weekend is right before Anzac Day. I’m sure this will be a popular time for people to take extra leave.

Reconciliation Day

Reconciliation Day is a unique ACT public holiday. It marks the start of National Reconciliation Week and acknowledges the mistreatment of Australia’s Indigenous peoples. Reconciliation Day in 2024 is on Monday, 27 May.

Canberra Day

Canberra Day celebrates the founding of Canberra and is obviously unique to the ACT. A day of community events is usually held in Commonwealth Park. Canberra Day coincides with the Canberra Balloon Spectacular and Enlighten, so there is always plenty to see and do.
