Exciting news (assuming you like spiders)! A previously unknown spider species has been discovered here in the ACT.This trapdoor spider was found by our staff in the Molonglo River Reserve; and while many trapdoor spiders are known to taxonomists, this particular species has never been described.Trapdoor spiders are well-adapted to dry climates and are particularly prevalent in Western Australia—so the potential discovery of this new species on the eastern seaboard is especially interesting. And if you’re wondering about the name, trapdoor spiders are known for building burrows with a silk-hinged trapdoor made of soil and vegetation. They use the trapdoor to ambush their prey from beneath. But don’t stress: this spider is not dangerous to humans.
